Year 1
Welcome to Year 1.
Welcome to spring term in Year One! I am the Year One class teacher (Miss Baker) and we also are lucky enough to have two assistant teachers within our classroom – Mrs Fountain and Miss Barteneva.
This spring term, the children will be learning all about story and report writing in English. They will build on their key skills introduced and focused on in autumn (within handwriting, reading and writing) to begin to apply and consolidate these. We focus several genres and books this term such as; Farmer Duck (story writing), One Day on our Blue Planet (reports), The Tiger who Came to Tea (alternative ending) and poetry (acrostic poems). We also have daily guided reading lessons and handwriting lessons. The children continue to have daily phonics sessions to develop their reading and spelling with a big focus on sound recognition in verbal words.
In maths, the children will explore place value to 50 and use this knowledge to compare, order and explore numbers. They will use skills of addition and subtraction to apply these numbers and begin to solve calculations in a variety of ways. They will also look at measuring of volume, height, weight and capacity this term.
For our topics, the children undertake fantastic cross-curricular learning, focusing on our history and geography. This term we will be completing two topics – Time Travellers and Treasure Island! They will use and create maps, understand different important individuals throughout history (from Florence Nightingale to Marcus Rashford), use timelines and understand important vocabulary.
In science, the children will be exploring materials and really understanding what items can be made from and their properties. They will ask questions such as ‘can all materials float?’, ‘what materials are transparent?’ and ‘what materials build the strongest bridges?’ They will also be exploring our unit on plants; looking at the structure and needs of plants and trees as well as different types they see in their lives.
Throughout this term, the children will also be undertaking art, PSHE, RE, PE, music and computing learning that will develop them as active citizens. They will learn about Jesus as a good friend and the Easter story, about their goals and challenges and how to approach these as well as how to stay healthy, plus key movement, dance, vocals and ICT skills.
